Being Prepared to Leave a Rehab Program

An important part of successful recovery is having some things set up for you ahead of time before you leave an addiction treatment program. Of course, you should have a place where you know that you will be living, at least temporarily.

This can be with family members if you relationships with them are not so damaged as to prevent this. The place where you will be living should be a safe and ideally a supportive environment for your continuing progress in overcoming drug addiction or alcoholism. Another thing to keep in mind is that you should not begin to isolate yourself again after you leave a rehab program. Think of social things that you can do and people that you can be around in order to avoid depression and relapse. It is also important to have a detailed plan of how you will spend your time when you leave a treatment center, at least for the first two weeks. Your counselors can help you to come up with a routine that will facilitate success. If you plan to just go home and sit around all day, there will be nothing to keep your mind from wandering drugs and alcohol constantly and little to give you the motivation to not listen to cravings. Having a structure in your life is at least as important after you leave a rehab center as it is when you are in one.

In an ideal situation, you will have a job that you can go to when you finish a drug and alcohol treatment program, but that isn’t always possible to set up ahead of time. Alternatively, you can make detailed plans for how you will find work or go back to school. Working is a big part of being successful in addiction recovery.
