Teen Addiction Affects the Family

addiction01.jpg

Just as a parent’s drug and alcohol addiction has vast affects on the entire family, a teen with a substance abuse problem is also very destructive. As the problem escalates, the teen can become increasingly hostile and even violent toward family members. They are deceptive, have drastic mood swings, and care about nothing more than the drug or alcohol abuse. Teens with a severe addiction usually suffer great consequences, such as legal problems and dropping out of school.

Relationships within the family become strained and often dysfunctional. As parents are trying to figure out how to help the teen, they frequently also begin to blame themselves for somehow being responsible for the addiction. Siblings suffer in this environment, especially younger ones. The teen who has a drug or alcohol addiction sets a bad example for younger kids in the household. Brothers and sisters often feel ignored and may begin to act out to get attention. The situation is made worse if people don’t know how to help and unintentionally enable the addiction.

Parents of teens with a drug and alcohol abuse problem need to seek some form of addiction treatment as soon as possible. The sooner the condition is identified and treated, the easier this will be. Parents have many options of rehabilitation for teens. The action that is taken should depend on the severity of the addiction problem. Some people need addiction treatment in a residential rehab facility. This is appropriate if the drug and alcohol abuse has been going on for a long period of time. In mild situations, an outpatient treatment center, counseling, and support groups can work.

There are various types of programs specifically geared toward teens with drug and alcohol additions. Some rehab centers only accept teenage patients. There are also specialty boarding schools. Teens can overcome addiction with the support of their parents and trained professionals.
