The Twelve Step Program was initially devised by the Alcoholics Anonymous and was contained in The Big Book, which was released by them in 1939 to supplement their treatment program.

It can be said that this program is the most successful therapeutic program of the world, if not by its results then by the number of other organizations that have duplicated it. Programs like the Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Marijuana Anonymous and several others are using their own customized versions of the Twelve Step Program, adding, deleting and modifying points to suit their own visions and goals. However, the basic Twelve Step Program formulated by the Alcoholics Anonymous remains quite unchanged from its original release. The program delves over three main agencies that can bring about a positive change in the person’s alcohol abuse habit, the primary being the addict themselves, the second being a Higher Power which is stated to be God and the third an experienced person who can guide the person out of the habit.

The program starts with the person admitting that alcohol is something that has rendered them powerless and has made their lives unmanageable. It further goes on to invoke a Higher Power to effectuate the addiction treatment from the problem. With complete submission to God, the person agrees to work with a sponsor, who is an experienced person in whom they can confess their misdoings and fallacies in their addicted life and affirm to make amends. The program concludes by having the person indeed make amends to all the people they have hurt due to the addiction and continue living in a sober life.

A main factor in the Twelve Step Program being a success is that it invokes spiritual realization within self to overcome the alcohol addiction. The presence of the Higher Power provides the moral fiber to do so, and the sponsor helps as the practical implementer of the policies.
