Understanding Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program for Alcohol Abuse in Tennessee

When researching for options on alcohol addiction treatment in Tennessee, you will come across two kinds of outpatient treatment programs. One of them is simply called as the outpatient treatment program while the other is known as an intensive outpatient treatment program. Though both of them are conducted in the outpatient format, there are differences between them. You must know about these so that you can select the most appropriate program for yourself.

Outpatient Program

The outpatient treatment program in Tennessee is the mildest form of treatment for an alcohol problem. Here, the focus is on counseling you on what alcohol addiction is and how it can affect your life personally, financially and socially. This is mostly an individual program which is conducted for three to four hours a day twice or thrice a week. The program is more about counseling than about medical treatment. But if the treatment provider deigns that you will need a detox program, then you will be either referred to a detox program in Tennessee or you will be put on an outpatient detox program at the same center with constant monitoring.

Intensive Outpatient Program

This is a more severe form of the outpatient treatment program where there is a greater focus on the medical treatment. There is a detox program which can be considered at an outside center or can be included in an outpatient format with monitoring just as above. The basic difference is that there can be a group program that includes other people who are fighting alcohol problems and the frequency of the sessions will be greater.
