Why Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs are So Expensive

There is no doubt that drug addiction and alcoholism treatment programs can be extremely expensive, especially when the individual needs an extended stay in a residential rehab center. Tens of thousands of dollars is not unusual for ninety days of treatment, which research shows is the minimum amount of time that most addicts should stay in order to be successful.

However, there are some legitimate reasons for this cost. For one thing, drug rehab programs must have experienced and qualified staff in order to be effective in helping patients. The counselors, nurses, and everyone else who works there must be paid fairly for their expertise. When patients are living in a rehab center, all of the normal expenses that go along with this must be taken into consideration. This includes everything from utility bills to providing healthy food, cleaning services, and security. Treatment centers also have to buy the educational materials that patients will need to use. They are often located on a quiet and sometimes spacious piece of land. Other services like exercise equipment, yoga instructors, and art classes add to the bill.

There are certainly ways to make addiction treatment more affordable, but the vast majority of facilities are still considered very expensive for the average family. Rehab programs that are operated by a government agency or a non-profit organization are typically cheaper than privately-funded facilities, for example. It is not necessary to choose a place that offers luxury accommodations in order to be successful in recovery. This might make your time there more enjoyable, but it also drives the costs up dramatically. In the end, a quality rehab program will more than make up for the amount of money that is spent on it. Making sure that the addict is ready to change will help to ensure this.
