Why Treatment Centers Have So Many Rules

Drug and alcohol rehab centers usually have strict rules about behavior for their patients. Patients often think that these things are unfair and too limiting. They don’t like having the freedoms that they are used to being taken away.
However, there is almost always a good reason and a purpose behind each rule, even if it is not always immediately apparent to the patient. Many of the rules are put in place in order to make people feel safe while they are in the treatment center. Not feeling safe makes individuals get stressed out, especially when they are away from home and living in close quarters with other people that they don’t know all that well. Of course, stressful situations are not good for patients who are working to overcome drug and alcohol addiction. It is one of the most common things that leads to relapse. The last thing that people should have to be concerned about during this delicate time is their own physical safety. Not being comfortable in the physical environment of the rehab center could even cause an individual to quit a treatment program or give them an excuse for doing so. That is why minor incidences are usually dealt with in a very serious manner.
One of the other reasons for rules in alcohol and drug rehab centers is to create structure. This is an essential element of addiction recovery. You have to create new habits of responsibility and accountability to replace the old habits of substance abuse. If this doesn’t begin while you’re in a treatment program, it won’t be put into place when you go home. If you were able to quit using drugs and alcohol by making the lifestyle choices that you were in the past, you would have done it already. These rules are for your safety and benefit in addiction recovery, as well.
